When a tooth is damaged or decayed, the bacteria threaten the existence of the tooth. The tooth may have to be restored in order to stay protected. There are several types of restorations available in dentistry to protect a weak or decayed tooth from further damage and to aid its functionality. A dental crown is a cap that is used by our dentist when your tooth is in a stage where it cannot sustain on its own and needs external protection to prevent damage. A dental crown can be made of porcelain, gold or other metals that are bio-compatible. The crowns we have for offer at Smiles of Cary Family Dentistry are natural, strong and wonderfully aid the functionality of weak or damaged natural teeth. A dental crown is used as a restoration under various circumstances. It is mould to look similar to natural tooth and is designed to bear biting load. It completely caps the portion of the tooth above the gum-line. By acting as a protective barrier against bite load and bacteria, a dental crown ensures that the tooth is safe in place. Following are some of the common cases where a dental crown may be recommended.
A decayed or severely damaged tooth requires immediate dental attention. Our dentist firstly checks the tooth and notes down symptoms of pain if there is any. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed using appropriate dental instruments. The cavity is filled using dental fillings and the tooth is prepared to hold the crown. Some amount of the top surface of the tooth is removed in order to make space for bonding the crown. Impressions of prepared tooth are taken and a temporary acrylic crown is fabricated at our office. This temporary crown caps the tooth until the permanent one is fabricated at the lab. The patient is advised on how to take care for the temporary crowns at Cary,Raleigh NC. During the follow-up visit, the temporary is removed and we check the fit of the permanent crown. On confirmation of fit, the tooth is cleaned and the crown is bonded over it using dental cement. Our team educates the patient on how to maintain oral hygiene when living with dental crown. With proper care, dental crowns can last for about 5-8 years.
